Privacy and User Data Policy

Overview

Road Alert provides road awareness features including community reports, official road alerts, fixed safety camera awareness, traffic camera locations, trip advisory tools and weigh station alerts. This policy explains what information may be collected and how it is used.

Applicable New Zealand privacy law

Where New Zealand privacy law applies, Road Alert handles personal information with reference to the Privacy Act 2020 and the Information Privacy Principles. This policy does not limit any privacy rights that cannot legally be excluded.

Information Road Alert may collect

Road Alert may collect precise location while the app is in use and, if enabled by the user, background location so road alerts can work when the app is closed or the screen is off. Road Alert may also collect report coordinates, report type, report notes, timestamps, app settings, app region, feedback messages, support messages, moderation status, basic diagnostics, service logs and device or app identifiers needed to operate the service.

Location data

Location is used to compare a device position with nearby road events and to trigger relevant alerts. When a user submits a report, the report location may be sent to Road Alert so other users can be warned. Location may also be used to show nearby alerts on the map and to prepare trip advisory results.

Community reports, feedback and messages

Community reports, feedback and support messages may be reviewed by Road Alert operations. Reports may be corrected, confirmed, rejected, archived, removed or used to improve alert quality. Users should not include personal information about other people in reports.

How information is used

Information is used to provide alerts, display nearby events, sync reports, respond to messages, moderate content, detect misuse, improve alert accuracy, maintain service reliability and comply with legal obligations.

Sharing and service providers

Road Alert does not sell personal data. Information may be processed by service providers used for hosting, storage, security, diagnostics, app distribution, maps, email support or other services needed to operate Road Alert. Information may also be disclosed if required by law or to protect the service and its users.

Official and public data sources

Road Alert may display information derived from official or public road data sources. Road Alert NZ is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by NZTA Waka Kotahi, Police, transport agencies, councils or any government agency unless expressly stated.

Security

Road Alert uses encrypted network connections where supported. No system can be guaranteed completely secure, but reasonable steps are taken to protect information used by the service.

Retention and deletion

Road Alert keeps information only as long as reasonably needed for operation, moderation, safety, support, diagnostics, legal compliance or security. Users can request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information by emailing roadalertnz@gmail.com. Some records may be retained where required for safety, security, audit, legal or abuse-prevention reasons.

Children

Road Alert is not directed at children. The app is intended for road users who can legally and safely use driver awareness tools.

Changes

This policy may be updated as Road Alert develops. The date at the top of this page shows the latest version.
